Compressing audio often causes some loss in quality just on its own. Coding algorithms are often described as lossless or lossy, because of their fundamental characteristics. Where a highly compressed lossy voice algorithm is employed, there may be some loss in voice quality even where there is no packet loss or any other network effects. Further where highly compressed voice is used, it may also deteriorate more when packets are lost.
