There are many solutions for talking over the Internet, including Microsoft Messenger, Yahoo, AOL/AIM and those were available before Skype. Skype is certainly the most talked about service option and used all over the world. How did Skype get so popular?
Much of Skype's success had to do with when and how it started. Being a late entrant, Skype was a re-invention of what was needed. From a user view, they offered a method that worked almost without exception, and it has only gotten better. It had the highest quality voice, much better than is even possible on a regular telephone. Easy to download and use, offering high-quality free PC-to-PC calling put them on the map very quickly. One feature that has separated Skype from others is conferencing and this includes multiple parties sharing a chat window. That was just the start.
Skype then proceeded to add capabilities that continued to push it beyond what others offered. After you discover that you can talk for free when you and a friend are at your PC, what is next? Most providers let you make a call for low rates to a regular phone, but then run out of ideas about what to do. Skype, augmented with a community of developers, has continued to grow and add features beyond any alternative. That is a very impressive achievement, considering the breadth of competition trying to get the attention of users. You can use any of the many options to talk from PC-to-PC, but Skype stands apart.
