There are many solutions for talking over the Internet, including Microsoft Messenger, Yahoo, AOL/AIM and those were available before Skype. Skype is certainly the most talked about service option and used all over the world. How did Skype get so popular?
Much of Skype's success had to do with when and how it started. Being a late entrant, Skype was a re-invention of what was needed. From a user view, they offered a method that worked almost without exception, and it has only gotten better. It had the highest quality voice, much better than is even possible on a regular telephone. Easy to download and use, offering high-quality free PC-to-PC calling put them on the map very quickly.
