After you get the analog to digital concept this will seem obvious, but it is included to help you get the concept without knowing what magic may be required. Imagine that we are to make a person digital. Let's make it very simple, by making a simple stick figure; a head, 2-arms, 2-legs and a body. Count the parts and you get 6, so that is a 6-bit representation of a person.
You can see that you can't tell much about a person with only 6-bits of information. But how many bits are needed, and needed for what. For playing hangman those 6-bits are just fine. You can see why in the Internet and computer age we are obsessed with bits and how many bits; because the more we have the better we can represent the analog world that we live in. This concept applies directly to voice and VoIP.
