The need for understanding what VoIP is is interesting when considered in comparison to what it may be replacing. Never has there been any more than passing interest in how the telephone and telephone network has been working for 120 years. Early transmission was entirely analog wired transmission, then toward the end of the last century we migrated to a largely digital network with only analog in the local loop (the wires from the phone to the phone company).
Already that seems more technical than you ever wondered about how the phone worked, so why the preoccupation now. For the record the current phone system today runs on TDM or time division multiplexing. Of course, you never asked anyone to explain that. We could have been promoting VoTDM but that was never the case.
The summary statement is that how the network operates is not critically important to a user. There are some differences that are showing up in the market that do raise some question and we will address those. Connecting a phone to an Ethernet connection is a new concept. Similarly talking to your PC is a new concept.
The real job of technology should be to make these applications transparent and easy to use, so you can simply enjoy the benefits. Because we are still at an early stage in some cases the user will need to learn to accommodate, but not really try to understand the physics and engineering. While you don't need to know, we are pleased that you are interested and equally pleased to help you understand what you find useful.
